Aviation flooring for the rooms that keep the field running — lobbies, line shacks, GSE bays, fuel pads and wash racks
The hangar deck gets all the attention and then the FBO loses a customer because the lobby floor is peeling, or a GSE bay slab soaks up ten years of diesel and hydraulic fluid. Aviation flooring is a campus problem, and each room on that campus has a different failure waiting for it.
Aviation flooring is six problems, not one
An airport operation is a set of rooms with almost nothing in common except the fuel. A pilot lounge takes stiletto heels and coffee. A line shack takes deiced boots and a hose. A ground support equipment bay takes diesel, hydraulic fluid and a steel-wheeled jack. A fuel farm containment pad takes spilled Jet A and an EPA inspector. Specify one product for all of them and five of the six rooms get the wrong floor.
What ties the aviation industry flooring picture together is exposure the rest of the construction world does not plan for: petroleum products daily, glycol deicing fluid every winter, wash-down water with detergent, and a door that opens onto weather. Those four decide resin selection in every room on this page.
Why ramp-adjacent aviation flooring fails first
Every space with a door to the apron inherits the apron. Deicing fluid tracks in on wheels and boots and is far more aggressive on a cheap coating than anyone expects. Snowmelt carries chloride from the ramp into the slab. Thermal shock at the threshold — a warm floor and a sub-freezing rolling door opening a dozen times an hour — puts a cycling stress on the bond line right where the traffic is heaviest.
Our aviation flooring answer to all of that is boring and it works: mechanical profile to ICRI CSP 2–3, moisture measured per ASTM F2170, adequate build, an aliphatic topcoat that does not amber, and slip texture placed where water and fluid actually land rather than sprayed uniformly across a room that then cannot be mopped.

FBO lobbies and pilot lounges
This is the only aviation flooring on the field a customer judges you by, and it is also the floor that takes tracked-in deicer and a rolling bag every ten minutes. A decorative flake or a solid-color high-gloss build reads as finished rather than industrial, cleans with a mop, and does not telegraph every heel mark. Watch the transition at the ramp door: that is where the slip incidents happen and where a uniform gloss finish stops being a good idea.
Line service areas and ops rooms
Boots come in wet, deiced or fueled, and the floor is never given a day off. Line service aviation flooring wants a mid-build epoxy with grit broadcast in a band at every exterior door and around the sink and hose bib, with a coved base so the wash water does not undercut the wall. Light color helps more than it seems — these rooms are usually under-lit and a reflective floor is free lumens.
Flight schools and training shops
Low aircraft weight, high foot traffic, and a maintenance corner where a student is draining oil for the first time. Flake epoxy is the value pick in flight-school aviation flooring: it hides dropped-tool marks, survives the traffic, and takes coated-in marked positions so trainers know exactly where an airframe parks. Budget is real here, so we will tell you honestly when a thin-film program covers it.
GSE, tug and baggage equipment shops
The hardest aviation flooring on most fields. Diesel, hydraulic fluid, battery acid from belt loaders and tugs, steel-wheeled jacks, and welding. This is where a standard epoxy is genuinely not enough — we go to a novolac body coat or a fuel-resistive multi-coat build, detail heavy under the lift and drip positions, and cove the base so a hot wash does not put fluid behind the wall. Expect $8 to $12 per square foot for a floor that actually holds.
Fuel farm and containment pads
A containment pad has one job: hold a spill until it can be recovered. That means a chemically resistant, seamless, coved system with every penetration detailed and a curb that is actually continuous. Aviation flooring is one part of a containment design that your environmental engineer owns — we install to their detail and we will tell you where a coating cannot substitute for a liner or a structural repair.
Wash bays and apron-adjacent service areas
Standing water, detergent and a constant freeze-thaw cycle at the door. Wash bay aviation flooring needs aggressive slip texture, a verified slope to the drain before any coating goes down, and a coved base. If the slab does not drain, a coating will not fix it — that is a concrete problem and we will say so during the assessment rather than after.
Strippable aviation floor coatings: what they are, and why we do not sell them
People search for strippable aviation floor coatings and get a page of resinous flooring contractors pretending the phrase means them. It does not. A strippable — or peelable — coating is a temporary, sacrificial film, usually water-based, rolled or sprayed over a floor that is already finished. It catches overspray, fuel and grime, and when it is dirty you score an edge and peel the whole sheet off the floor and bin it.
In aviation it shows up in two places. Aircraft paint hangars and spray booths use strippable floor and wall coatings so that overspray leaves with the peel instead of building up into a dust source that ruins the next finish. Terminals and lobbies use a related but different product — strippable acrylic floor finish, the stuff a janitorial crew burnishes weekly and chemically strips twice a year.
Neither one is aviation flooring in the sense that matters, and neither is what we install. A strippable coating is a consumable that your paint shop or your janitorial contractor applies and reapplies, and it needs something underneath it. That something is the part we do.
- In a paint bay: a hard, solvent-resistant permanent build underneath, so the peel comes off cleanly and the concrete never sees the overspray. A soft or under-built floor bonds to the strippable and tears when you peel it.
- In a lobby: if you are paying for quarterly strip-and-wax on a terminal floor, price ten years of that labor against a one-time resinous or polished finish. The maintenance line item is usually the bigger number.
- If a bidder offers you "strippable epoxy": ask whether they mean a temporary peelable film or a permanent coating they intend to remove later. Those are different products with different prices.
Deicing fluid is the aviation flooring exposure nobody specs for
Glycol-based Type I and Type IV fluids get tracked into every room with a ramp door, every winter, for months. They are slippery, they are persistent, and on marginal aviation flooring they do real damage.
It is genuinely slick
Residual glycol on a high-gloss floor is a fall risk long after the aircraft is deiced. Grit broadcast in a band at every exterior door earns its place here more than anywhere else on the field.
It attacks weak films
A thin-film paint or a poorly cured epoxy softens and discolors under repeated glycol exposure. A properly cured high-build system shrugs it off. This is a build and cure question, not a brand question.
It needs removing, not spreading
Mopping glycol around redistributes it. Auto-scrub with a neutral cleaner and recover the water. We hand over a written cleaning routine with every aviation flooring install rather than assuming it is obvious.
Aviation flooring, answered
They are sacrificial, temporary films — usually water-based — applied over a floor that is already finished, then peeled off and discarded when dirty. In aviation they are used mainly in aircraft paint hangars and spray booths to trap overspray so it leaves with the peel instead of contaminating the next paint job. A related product, strippable acrylic floor finish, is what janitorial crews apply and chemically strip in terminals and lobbies. Neither is a permanent floor system and neither is what we install; both need a sound, hard permanent floor underneath, which is.
Different finish, same discipline. A lobby is judged on appearance, so it gets a decorative flake or a high-gloss solid color rather than a utilitarian gray. But it is still aviation flooring: deicer and fuel come in on boots, rolling bags hammer the traffic lanes, and the ramp door is a slip risk in every season. We spec the lobby with the same prep and moisture testing as the hangar and change the topcoat and the slip detailing to suit the room.
Usually, but the honest answer depends on how deep it has gone. Aviation flooring over surface contamination is straightforward, because that grinds off. Oil that has migrated into the slab over years has to be drawn out or cut out — degreasing, poulticing, and in bad cases removing the contaminated concrete and rebuilding it. Coating over a saturated slab produces a floor that disbonds in patches within a year. We core and test before quoting a GSE shop for exactly this reason, and we will tell you if the number is bigger than you hoped.
A chemically resistant, seamless, coved coating is one layer of a containment design, not the whole thing. The containment volume, curb continuity, penetration detailing and drainage are engineering decisions that sit with your environmental or civil engineer, and a coating cannot compensate for a cracked structure or an under-sized berm. We install to the detail we are given and we will tell you plainly where a coating is being asked to do a liner's job.
For a lobby or ops room, one to three working days with a conventional build and often a single overnight with a polyaspartic system. For a GSE shop or a hangar bay, three to five days conventionally, or 24 hours to tow-in with polyaspartic. We phase by room and by bay so the operation never stops entirely, and the cure milestones go into the contract rather than being discovered on site. No, and blanket grit is a mistake. A uniformly textured floor is harder to clean, holds dirt, and in a maintenance space makes dropped hardware harder to find. We place slip texture where liquid actually lands: door thresholds, wash bays, drip zones under wings and gear, around hose bibs and sinks, and on any ramp or slope. Elsewhere, a hard aliphatic topcoat with a satin rather than mirror gloss usually gives all the traction the room needs.
